“NextGen Bio-Based Fertilisers – Exploring Sustainable Agriculture at the SUSFERT Online Seminar”

In today’s rapidly changing world, sustainable agriculture practices have become paramount in ensuring food security while preserving our environment. On September 27, 2023, at 10:10 AM, the SUSFERT Sustainable Fertilisers online seminar, titled “NextGen Bio-Based Fertilisers – Products and Impact,” promises to be a pivotal event in this journey towards sustainable farming. This seminar brings together prominent experts and innovators to discuss developments within the SUSFERT project over the past five years.

The SUSFERT Project: Nurturing Sustainable Agriculture

The SUSFERT project aims to revolutionize the fertiliser industry by promoting the development and adoption of sustainable, multifunctional fertilisers. The project’s primary goals include reducing the environmental impact of fertilisers, improving nutrient use efficiency, and exploring innovative bio-based fertiliser solutions. More detailed information on the SUSFERT project, achieved milestones and other news can be found on the SUSFERT website. Interested individuals can access valuable resources, research findings, and project updates, all contributing to the broader mission of sustainable agriculture.

Meet the Speakers: Visionaries in Sustainable Agriculture

The SUSFERT seminar boasts an impressive lineup of speakers, each with invaluable insights into sustainable agriculture and bio-based fertilisers:

Mr. Adriano Altissimo started research on plants in the early 90’s and in the early 2000s he focused on bio-stimulants. Since then, he focused his attention on new agriculture, based on precision nutrition, plants support for bio-protection, and bio-stimulation.

Presentation: Bio-stimulants as the Driving Factor for Biobased Fertilisers

Mr. Leon Fock has been active as a producer in the market of organic-fertilizers for almost 20 years and currently serves as CEO of Culterra Holland. He is Chairman of EUROFEMA, the European organic fertilizer manufacturers association.

Presentation: From Niche to Norm – The Importance and Impact of Biobased Fertilisers

Mr. Rüdiger Weichesmüller: As the Key Account Manager at AGRANA STARCH, Mr. Weichesmüller offers a unique perspective on the commercial implications of sustainable fertilisers. In addition, he will speak about iron chelating capabilities as a necessity of biobased fertilisers.

Presentation: Iron Chelating Capabilities as a Necessity of Biobased Fertilisers

Mrs. Renate Weiß is a senior scientist at the Institute for Environmental Biotechnology at BOKU. Her scientific focus is on enzyme technology and circular economy processes. In the last years she managed to win several awards such as the Impact Award of GFF Lower Austria.

Presentation: Soil Improver Applications for Increased Yield

Mr. Sylvain Pluchon, Director for R&D at Groupe Roullier, is an agronomist with a PhD in Plant Physiology. Has been working for Groupe Roullier for 12 years and he will shed light on industry advancements and innovations. The focus of his presentation will lie in particular on the new generation of NPK fertiliser.

Presentation: New generation of NPK

Mr. Gibson Nyanhongo is the Co-Inventor and Co-Founder of Agrobiogel GmbH and is currently also a Visiting Distinguished Professor at the University of Johannesburg. He is a passionate biotechnologist with over 20 years experience in research cutting across life sciences, chemistry, polymer science, material science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, product design and formulation.

Prersentation: Nutrigels in Action

Mr. Sebastian Michel conducted his PhD studies in the field of quantitative genetics and plant breeding at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna in Austria. Since 2021 he is a senior scientist and he focuses his research on the usage of artificial intelligence in plant breeding and the statistical analysis of field trials.

Presentation: The Challenges of Field Trials – SUSFERT as Best Practice

Mr. Marc Spiller is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Antwerpen (BE), with focus on resource recovery from wastewater, P and N recirculation between cities, industry and agriculture and life cycle assessments in the bioeconomy.

Presentation: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of multifunctional fertilisers

A Conversation Shaping the Future

The core of the SUSFERT seminar revolves around a science and industry conversation. It will spotlight sustainable, multifunctional fertiliser prototypes developed within the SUSFERT project over the past five years. These prototypes represent the cutting edge of sustainable agriculture, promising to reduce environmental harm while being economically competitive.

Throughout the seminar, attendees can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the potential impact these fertilisers can have on the industry and farming practices. How will they transform the way we nourish our crops while caring for our planet?
